Back to School Edition 2022

Investing in Our Future!

On August 4, 2022, over 60 beginning teachers (BTs) and guests joined together in the Reich College of Education to receive support, encouragement, resources, and networking opportunities! It was a high-spirited day of amazing activities, lessons, tours, collaboration, and speakers (including a keynote from the NCCAT 2022 Prudential NC Beginning Teacher of the Year, Xavier Adams, and 2 sessions led by NCCAT 2021 Prudential NC Beginning Teacher of the Year, Emilee Higdon.) As BTs attended sessions led by NC New Teacher Support Coaches and Open Way Learning facilitators, they had a chance to gain new strategies, mindsets, and tools for building a better tomorrow in their classroom. We were proud to offer up this "Cel-YOU-bration" for our young educators as a thank you for their choice to join this profession and as a sign of great things to come in the future! As Superintendent Elliott recently shared in his Convocation speech on August 16th to over 800 Watauga County Schools' employees, "(We) are all here today working and dedicating our lives to the idea that we are creating a brighter and better future through public education."

I want to welcome back all of our Public School Partners to another year of hope, promise, and investment--including 4 new Partners this year (Catawba County Schools, Hickory Public Schools, Mount Airy City Schools, and the Academy at Elkin!) Each day that you choose public school students and staff members, you are choosing to invest in the future of our society. You are making things better with every hand shake, smile, compliment, conversation, lesson, and activity! I am so very proud to cheer on such creative, passionate, and devoted educators who are showing up every day for kids--whether for the first year or the 30th year of their career! You all bring such unique and valuable assets to your classrooms, schools, and districts. As I have shared before, our theme this coming year in the Public School Partnership will be "Innovations in Action" and I know we will continue to grow together as we learn from each other and celebrate our work!

NC NTSP: Here We Grow Again!

The Appalachian State Region's North Carolina New Teacher Support provides weekly coaching, aligned professional development sessions at district Beginning Teacher meetings, and annual state-wide Beginning Teacher Institutes (Fall and Spring). Beginning in the Fall of 2022, the NC New Teacher Support Program will serve 156 beginning teachers in 13 Public School Units across the NW NC Region! Because of our growth, we will be adding a 5th coach to our team, on loan to us this year from Western Carolina University! We welcome Mr. Jason Miller from Asheville, NC to our App State Team to assist in serving Alexander County Schools, Hickory Public Schools, and the NC School for the Deaf!

A little about Jason Miller:

Prior to becoming a WCU instructional coach for NC NTSP in 2021, Jason Miller was an educator and administrator in the NC Public School system for over 14 years. His most recent appointment was a principalship in Buncombe County Schools.  His school administration experience includes grades Kindergarten through 6th grade.   As a teacher/band director, Mr. Miller taught grades 6th through 12th.  In 2014, he was named Teacher of the Year at Eblen Intermediate School.  Mr. Miller has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Mars Hill College and a Master’s degree in School Administration.  He enjoys spending time with his family and dogs in the mountains of Western North Carolina.

If YOU need coaching and support for your beginning teachers, residency licensure teachers, or hard to fill positions, reach out to our team! Let us know how we can add value to your BT support program!

Hear. Share. Act. Series Coming to a town near you!

Are you interested in learning how to have your voice heard on the disability system in NC?  This event is for you!   We are inviting everyone who has a stake in the I/DD worlds to join us at the following hybrid event as we learn how to tell our stories, stock up on local resources for people with disabilities and talk to our policymakers about what’s working and what’s broken in North Carolina’s I/DD service world!

LAND, Family Support Network of High Country, and the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities want to meet and hear from individuals with I/DD, their families, and caregivers to learn about unmet services and support needs.

The event will bring together community partners, agency leaders, and policymakers to hear your story, share resources, and provide education on how you can advocate, educate, and inform key decision-makers on the importance of listening to the voices of those with I/DD lived experience.

This is event is hybrid.

In person location is Appalachia State University Reich College of Education Building at 151 College Street Boone, NC 28607
