The View from Up Here!

As the beautiful visions of autumn fill our hearts and minds with a sense of awe and appreciation, we pause to take in the sights, smells, and sounds of such a breathtaking season! It is easy to forget that such beauty and grandeur also exists in our classrooms each day. From the sounds of holiday music being practiced in the band room to the sights of little ones reading with each other on the carpet, to the smell of hot lunches in the cafeteria as children talk and laugh over a shared meal....these are the moments of awe and appreciation that make our lives as educators complete. In the hustle and bustle of new norms and the inevitable changes in school climate, let's all take a moment to stop and enjoy the view from where we are. It can be simple, but it can also be glorious!

The Reich College of Education joins you in enjoying the view! We smile as we pass by students in bustling classrooms, watch pumpkins exploding in live science labs, see professors gathering for coffee, note classes being taught on the lawn, pass families who are now touring and making future plans....What a sight, what a pleasure, and what a difference a year makes!

As we pause to connect and reflect this month, we want to continue to keep you abreast of the beautiful things happening in our RCOE and around our region and state. Check out our weekly October Connected newsletters from the Office of the Dean to stay in touch! And don't forget to enjoy the view!

Can YOU use up to $1000 for classroom needs?

The Appalachian State University Fall Partnership Mini-Grants are being processed now and winners will be announced next month!

Spring 2022 Mini-Grant Applications are now available and due by February 25, 2022. The purpose of such grants is to create opportunities for teachers and Faculty to work together on sustainable, innovative projects for the classroom and beyond!

Hear what one local teacher had to say about her Mini-Grant experience:

"I just wanted to thank you again--SO much-- for the PSP Grant Funds for our reading nook. It has been an incredible success! The kids now gravitate to the area during their downtimes, whereas last year the reading area wasn't even on their radar. The combination of the bean bags and the quality, high-interest board books has made a phenomenal difference! Great things are happening!"  (see pic above!)

To apply for a mini-grant for up to $1000 towards a classroom project or research initiative in our region, please complete this form by February 28, 2022.

Reading Research Opportunity

Dear Teachers,

Drs. Rebecca Jordan and Ashley Pennell from Appalachian State University are writing to ask for fifteen (15) minutes of your time to complete a survey that will better help us understand in-service teachers’ experience, knowledge, and perceptions regarding early literacy instruction. As a thank you for your time, you will be entered into a drawing to win one of 50 award-winning children’s titles that will be shipped directly to you! All teachers who complete the survey by October 31st will be entered into a drawing for one of fifty award-winning children’s books.

Please use the following link to access the survey: https://appstate.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_etli3A7i56X8902

The benefits to participating are (1) the opportunity to win a new award-winning book for your classroom and (2) participation in advancing teacher professionalization and combating voices demeaning teacher knowledge and experiences regarding early literacy. There is no risk to your participation as your responses will never be linked to you personally and you can withdraw your consent to participate at any time.

If you have any questions, please contact Principal Investigators Rebecca Jordan and/or Ashley Pennell using the contact information below.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Lee Payne Jordan, PhD & Ashley E. Pennell, Ed.D.
