Greetings from the

Public School Partnership Director

It has been an honor to serve in the role as the Director of the RCOE Public School Partnership (PSP) this year. I have been delighted to get to know more about each district and its leaders, as you have faced our state and nation's realities with renewed creativity, compassion, and conviction. I am also learning so much from observing and absorbing the wonderful things our staff and faculty members in the Reich College of Education are doing to prepare to meet the needs of our Appalachian community, and beyond.

As we continue to prepare for the months ahead, I am committed to being there for our partners in a way that is most beneficial. Through the support, resources, collaborative projects, visits, celebrations, and shared communication efforts we will experience together, it is my hope that we will all grow stronger together for the sake of our students.

Our PSP theme this year will be "Equity Matters". In all of our discussions and in all of our decisions, we will seek to honor, include, and celebrate all opinions and perspectives as we serve our region together. My prayer is that the RCOE PSP will be "first" in your mind for the support you need, when you need it!

Mountaineer Readers

Turning Another Page in this Exciting Partnership Event!

Appalachian State University’s Mountaineer Readers initiative began in the Fall of 2007 as a partnership between App State's Reich College of Education and our App State Athletic Department. The purpose of the program is to support literacy among students in the Northwest North Carolina counties of Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Burke, Caldwell, Elkin, Watauga, Wilkes and our Appalachian State University Academy at Middle Fork.

During the summer of 2019, 540 regional students participated in the Mountaineer Readers program, reading nearly 14, 203 books. You can read about last year's event in this article:

Information has been sent out to school media coordinators and/or school contacts for this initiative. If there are any questions about this process, the timeline, or the celebratory events, please encourage coordinators to contact me directly. Thank you for sharing out this information with your schools! 📚

NC New Teacher Support

Supporting Beginning Teachers in the NW Region of NC!

NC New Teacher Support is provided to teachers in their BT1, BT2, or BT3 years in districts who elect to use these services to provide ongoing induction support for their beginning teachers. These three-pronged services include: 1) Weekly classroom coaching visits, 2) Timely PD for BTs in the district, and 3) An all-expense paid comprehensive conference, specifically for the BTs in the program.

Appalachian State currently provides NC New Teacher Support Services to BTs in Watauga County Schools, Ashe County Schools, Yadkin County Schools, Elkin City Schools, and the Appalachian State University Academy at Middle Fork. Our Appalachian State NC New Teacher Support Coach is Mrs. Karen Walker, a proud two-time graduate of App State, a National Board Certified Teacher, and an award-winning educator!

Congratulations to Watauga County Schools for receiving 3 FREE slots for continued NC NTSP coaching and support and Caldwell County Schools for receiving 3 FREE slots for your first year of NC NTSP coaching and support! Special thanks to the PSP Governing Board for approving the appropriation of funds to support the lottery for these FREE slots this year!

Exciting news is on the horizon! A new House Bill (HB 1212) has been proposed, which includes the request to provide support to approximately 1700 1st year teacher education 2020 graduates in North Carolina returning to work in our state’s public schools. Our statewide program is available to provide a blended model of support that has been informed and cultivated by the disruptive events that have impacted our education system during spring 2020. Building on our current coaching framework, all graduates and participants enrolled in the NC NTSP will have access to multiple services. NC NTSP has demonstrated how short-term investments in the educator workforce lead to long-term gains by fully equipping early career educators to support students and achieve their full professional potential. This expansion represents a commitment by the state of North Carolina to invest in early career educators giving them favorable opportunities to transform lives and elevate their chosen profession.  More updates will be provided as this House Bill progresses.
