Layers of Support!

I recently spent an inspiring evening on the campus of Western Carolina University to celebrate the announcement of the 2022 NCCAT Prudential Beginning Teacher of the Year. The event was alive with excitement as 20+ Beginning Teachers from across the state were applauded for their amazing skills and unmatched passions in their respective communities. The audience that night consisted of friends, parents, district leaders, generous sponsors, EPP partners, community members and students. I was honored to watch three of our Public School Partnership BTs walk across a stage and receive recognition for their contributions to the teaching profession. As I sat to take in these extraordinary BTs with our RCOE Assistant Dean, our NC New Teacher Support Lead Coach, the Superintendent of one of our Public School Partnership Districts, and a former NC Teacher of the Year/DPI Leader, I was struck with just how many resources our teachers have. I then had to ask myself, as overwhelmed as our teachers feel most days, what would it take for them to see the layers of support that are there for them--cheering them on, wishing them the best possible outcomes, hoping that they receive the recognition they deserve, wishing that they could see what we see when we look at them? I am determined to show them these layers every chance I get!

So, to all of our PSP teachers out there reading this--know that your support network of friends, parents, district leaders, sponsors, EPP partners, community members, and students want you to succeed EVERYDAY! We WANT to show up for you. We want you to not just survive but THRIVE in your profession as a teacher! Look around your audience every chance you get and notice all of the people who are cheering for you--because we want YOU to WIN!

As we continue to support our teachers, leaders, partners and university employees across our Partnership, we want to keep you engaged as a valuable member of our RCOE community. Check out our weekly February Connected newsletters from the Office of the Dean to stay in touch! Together, we will continue to create layers of support for our amazing educators!

Distinguished Professorship Coming to the RCOE

A $2 million gift from the C.D. Spangler Foundation has established the Spangler Distinguished Professorship of Early Child Literacy at Appalachian State University, the first named professorship in App State’s Reich College of Education.

The new professorship is part of an $8 million donation by the Spangler Foundation, divided equally among four University of North Carolina System institutions, to support the achievement of reading proficiency by North Carolina’s children. The professorships are designed to recruit and retain nationally recognized scholars who will support the training of future teachers and in-service teachers while also preparing future literacy faculty.

 "AppEd Reads" Online Library

Just in time for Read Across America Day on March 2nd!

The Outreach/Philanthropy Committee of Appalachian Educators Club recently set out to put together a video collection of RCOE students reading children's books aloud for K-5 students. This project was previously named Boone Book Buddies, but it is now referred to as AppEd Reads. Due to COVID, education students haven't had many opportunities to partner with surrounding schools, especially in the volunteer capacity. So the Appalachian Educators Club created an online YouTube Channel of App students reading some of their favorite books to our local elementary schools!

Click on the link below to see our pre-service teachers sharing some great literature in a video format! Consider sharing these with your kiddos during Read Across America Week!
